How to Reset the Pro 1 T701 Thermostat
Share
Does the T701 Have a Reset Button?
You may notice a small hole on the back of the T701 case labeled "Reset." However, this hole is non-functional on the T701 — Pro 1 uses the same plastic housing across several of its thermostat models, and the reset pinhole is only active on certain variants. Do not attempt to insert a pin or paperclip into it.
The correct way to reset the T701 is a power cycle. Here's how to do it.
How to Reset the Pro 1 T701 — Step by Step
1. Set the System Switch on the front of the thermostat to OFF
2. Gently pull the thermostat body off its wall subbase from the bottom — it snaps off without tools
3. Open the battery door on the front and remove both AA batteries
4. Wait at least 10 seconds
5. Reinsert the batteries and snap the thermostat back onto the subbase
6. Set the System Switch back to Heat or Cool as needed
7. Use the temperature setpoint buttons to set your desired temperature
The thermostat will restart and return to its default state. All Pro 1 T701 thermostats use two AA batteries — Duracell or Energizer are recommended for the best performance.
When Should You Reset the T701?
A reset is worth trying if you notice any of the following:
• The display is frozen or showing unusual characters
• The temperature setpoint won't change when you press the up or down buttons
• The system isn't responding to heating or cooling calls
• You just replaced the batteries and the display came back showing an incorrect or stuck temperature
• The thermostat was recently removed from the wall and reinstalled
After the Reset
The T701 is a non-programmable thermostat, so there are no schedules or custom settings to re-enter after a reset. Just set your desired temperature using the setpoint buttons and you're done. The Fan Switch and System Switch will also return to whatever position they were left in physically, so double-check that both are set correctly.
One thing to note: the T701 does have a compressor delay feature. If you switch the system to Cool immediately after a reset, the COOL icon may flash for up to 5 minutes before the compressor actually turns on. This is normal — it protects the compressor from short cycling.
Still Having Issues After the Reset?
If the reset doesn't fix the problem, the next step is to check your wiring connections at the subbase. Loose or corroded terminal screws are a common cause of erratic thermostat behavior and are easy to miss. With the thermostat pulled off the wall, inspect each terminal and ensure the wires are firmly seated and the screws are snug.
If the display is completely blank after a fresh set of batteries, the thermostat itself may have failed. The T701 has a 5-year limited warranty from Pro 1 — if it's within that window, contact your installing contractor or Pro 1 directly for a warranty claim.
Time to Replace?
If resetting and checking the wiring doesn't resolve the issue, it may be time to replace the unit. The T701 wires up using standard terminal labels (R, W, Y, G, C) so a replacement drops right into the existing subbase wiring in most cases.
